The setting is a colony ship of ten thousand passengers who are following in the wake of the original Atlas ship that headed off decades earlier on a pseudo-religious colonisation mission and has not been heard from since. Each of the first three novels stands alone and could be read in any order, but this book follows on directly from ‘After Atlas’ and really needs to be read in the right order and probably why Amazon calls it book 2. ‘Atlas Alone’ is the fourth novel set in Emma Newman’s ‘Planetfall’ universe, all of which I have enjoyed and found to be engaging and emotionally charged, with wonderfully complex characters and an intriguing background.

Still, my simply disliking it for personal reasons wouldn’t be enough for me to dock two stars. With that said, this book has some pretty disgusting and disturbing moments that were definitely not within my tastes. And the truth behind the nights spent out dancing was a truly fascinating and disturbing one. You cycle through who the possible killers are, unsure for a good portion of the story. As you’re still trying to figure out if the sisters are actually cursed or not, the mystery aspect is enough to keep you engaged on the edge of your seat. She also pushes the other girls to go out in society in search of husbands.ĭespite my general dislike toward horror-like stories, there were parts of House of Salt and Sorrows that were incredibly gripping. As the book begins with the funeral for the fifth death, their father’s new wife unaccustomed to such consistent mourning heralds the end of their bereavement with the announcement of her pregnancy. A horror-esque retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, this story follows what is meant to be twelve sisters–though the number has dwindled to eight by the beginning of the novel–who appear to be cursed as death has been slowly picking off the eldest one at a time, having begun first with their very own mother. But I can get where, at times, it could be said to capture your attention as a reader. Honestly, I kind of hated House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Segal received numerous awards and honors including a Golden Globe for his screenplay to Love Story as well as the Legion d. Early life and education edit Born and raised in a Jewish household in Brooklyn, New York, Segal was the first of three brothers. His first three books, Love Story, Olivers Story, and Man, Woman and Child, were all international bestsellers that became blockbuster films. Erich Wolf Segal (J January 17, 2010) was an American author, screenwriter, educator, and classicist who wrote the bestselling novel Love Story (1970) and its hit film adaptation. This is their story - a story of two young people and a love so uncompromising it will bring joy to your heart and tears to your eyes. Erich Segal was an American author, screenwriter, and classics professor. Their attraction to each other is immediate and powerful, and together they share a love that defies everything. Opposites in nearly every way, Oliver and Jenny are kindred spirits from vastly different worlds. This is the story of Oliver Barrett IV, a rich jock from a stuffy WASP family on his way to a Harvard degree and a career in law, and Jenny Cavilleri, a wisecracking working-class beauty studying music at Radcliffe. It is the story that told the world, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." It has sold more than 21 million copies worldwide and became a blockbuster film starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw. The iconic tale of love and loss that has touched the hearts of millions, Love Story has become one of the most adored novels of our time. "Funny, touching and infused with wonder, as all love stories should be." ( San Francisco Examiner ) The famed Cheshire Cat is in attendance (both with and without his portly body) as she gets herself elbow deep in flour and sugar, and the reader soon realizes that the fanciful feline is somewhat of a constant companion for the young lady. In preparation for the gathering, she is busily at work in the kitchen, much to her mother’s constant digress, creating pastries with all the flair and pizzaz of a most dedicated confectioner. Catherine finds the attention of the King to be a bother, but she must do her duty by her parents and attend the soiree in style. The story begins as Catherine and her handmaiden, Mary Anne, prepare for a party given by the King of Hearts, a tiny and silly little man who loves sweets - especially if said sweets come from a certain dark haired girl from Rock Turtle Cove. The story chronicles the life of one Catherine Pinkerton: the heiress to Rock Turtle Cove, a teenager who dreams of being a world class baker, a whimsical thinker, a devoted friend, and a vivaciously happy soul who lives under the thumb of two determined parents. Marissa Meyer, author of other such twisted tales as Fairest, Cinder, and Scarlett has tackled the Kingdom of Hearts in her new novel, Heartless. Have you ever asked yourself why the White Rabbit depends so much on a mystery woman named Mary Ann? Have you ever wondered how the Queen of Hearts of Wonderland came to be so…heartless? The whole thing is hilarious – I absolutely love the banter and some of her inner monologue. Predictable as all get out and I DO NOT CARE. well, we all know where this is going, don’t we? YES WE DO. But how lucky is she to be able to go to MAUI on her sister’s honeymoon? I mean, all things aside, it’s MAUI!!!! Then to be with a guy she doesn’t particularly care for…. Though I can’t relate to her amazing rack or ability to look that good in a swimsuit. I can completely relate to Olive and her bad luck and always feeling like the less successful one. Whenever I feel I need to cleanse my palate from my darker reads, this is the type of book that does it so perfectly. What a delightful, funny and engaging book! I have the softest spot for romcoms that are done as well as they are by these two authors. You can see our thoughts on Christina Lauren’s other book MY FAVORITE HALF-NIGHT STAND here.
